Rise & Scream Artist Spotlight Angela Vories
Angela Vories will be one of our artists showing at Rise And Scream on Saturday March 18th.
Artist Bio:
Creating art is my spiritual calling. As conveyed with rich depth by Vincent Van Gogh: “Your profession is not what brings home your weekly paycheck, your profession is what you’re put here on earth to do, with such passion and such intensity that it becomes spiritual in calling.” I seek an interactive relationship with viewers though layering photographs. I reconstruct moments captured in a single image in order to convey a message. A multi-faceted, multi-dimensional object (whether a person, a novel, a place or anything else) distinctly taking on it’s own atmosphere. Drawing out the subject’s allegorical depths submerged beyond the surface familiarity of a passing glance. Technically I am exposing the camera sensor. I gather images of textures. Then I use layering techniques, inspired by various mediums such as painting and print making. Through the advancements of Photoshop, I start to manipulate a digital file into exhaustive layers, yet a compressed single image. It is what compels me, my calling, to create, to an awakening that there is more to be seen, more to be felt, more to engage with. Spending endless hours sifting through textures, painstakingly dodging and burning layers of images over a single subject... A sensation that what is seen in a single dimension can be touched, not by one’s hand, but by one’s soul. The work I create using photography is evocative. It arrests the viewer from a distance and draws them in. Through layers of photographs built upon a singular subject, a sense of wonder and depth dances along one’s mind, as if we could touch another dimension of this single sheet of paper. I reveal through what is seen, that which is left to perceive. Images felt by the soul.

What is Rise & Scream?
Rise & Scream is a fundraiser for the International Institute of St. Louis. The fundraiser is a night of entertainment bringing people together with a large group of local creative artists.
All proceeds will be donated to the International Institute of St. Louis
The purpose of the International Institute is to be the St. Louis region’s welcoming center for refugees and immigrants. This year the Institute resettled more than 1,000 refugees from Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Iraq, and many other countries, all of whom had endured trauma and hardship and must now begin again. With support from the community, the Institute is there for refugees and immigrants for everything from English classes, job training & placement, and health services, to counseling, interpretation & translation, and small business assistance. With these services, the Institute works to fulfill its mission of helping immigrants and their families be productive Americans and championing ethnic diversity as a cultural and economic strength.
